A Platform For Justice That Democrats Can Fight For

Virginia Justice Democrats support candidates at the state and local levels in Virginia who commit to our platform of social, racial, economic, and environmental justice for all.

Virginia still struggles with injustices like: the outsized and corrupting influence Dominion Energy has over our General Assembly; the wealth and opportunity disparities between various communities across the Commonwealth; the discriminatory policies against LGBTQ, immigrants, and other marginalized communities; and the fact that our Black and brown communities are still disenfranchised by the criminal justice system. There is a lot of work to do.

Social Justice

Social justice demands equality in the distribution of wealth, opportunity, and privilege within society. In Virginia, this means that our democracy must be resilient and just, where no one is disenfranchised or marginalized.

Remove Outsized Corporate Influence through campaign finance reforms such as Campaign Contribution Limits, Disclosure Requirement of Contributions, Publicly Financed Campaigns, prohibiting publicly regulated utilities (like Dominion Energy and Appalachian Power) from donating to candidates and elected officials

Reform Democracy by implementing Automatic Voter Registration, Constitutional Amendment Guaranteeing Right to Vote, Invest and Update Voting Infrastructure, Professionalize the State Legislature, Ranked Choice Voting, National Popular Vote (interstate compact)

Pass Common Sense Gun Regulations that put the safety of our families, children, and communities first

Protect Against Bigotry & Discrimination based on race, gender identity, sexual orientation, ethnicity, religion, economic status, country of origin, and documentation status

Protect Women’s Rights & Gender Equality by defending Reproductive Rights and fighting for Equal Pay

Racial Justice

Racial justice requires the systematic fair treatment of people of all races, resulting in equitable opportunities and outcomes for all. In Virginia, this means not just the absence of discrimination and inequality based on race, but the presence of deliberate systems to right historical wrongs and achieve sustained racial equity through proactive and preventative measures.

Enact Criminal Justice Reforms such as Legalize Cannabis, End Cash Bail, Increase Felony Larceny Threshold, Record Expungement, Reform Pretrial System, Eliminate Mandatory Minimums, Eliminate Civil-Asset Forfeiture Without Due Process, End Qualified Immunity, Reinstatement of Parole

Restore Voting Rights to returning citizens convicted of felonies

Create Fair & Independent Districts by ending racial gerrymandering and achieving a non-partisan redistricting process

Economic Justice

Economic justice is the opportunity for each person to live a dignified, productive, and creative life free from poverty, hunger, and the destabilization caused by unsustainable gaps in wealth. In Virginia, economic justice means fighting for communities who are falling behind in terms of good jobs, quality healthcare, and affordable housing.

Defend Workers’ Rights by advocating for a living wage for all Virginians starting with securing a minimum wage of at least $15 and tying to inflation, Repealing the ‘Right To Work’, Public Option Healthcare (for all) / Expand Medicaid, Paid Family & Medical Leave

Environmental Justice

Environmental justice is the fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people regardless of race, color, national origin, or income with respect to the development, implementation, and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations, and policies. There should be no sacrifice zone when there is environmental justice. In Virginia, environmental justice means transforming our economy to address the dual crises of massive socioeconomic inequity and the existential threat of human-induced climate change without leaving anyone behind.
